Mario as a character was created by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and first appeared (as “Jumpman”) in the arcade game Donkey Kong, released in 1981.

Over time, that 1981 Jumpman character was refined into the Mario we know today, who then got his own titled game with Mario Bros. in 1983.
