The Christmas cracker was invented in the mid-19th century by London confectioner Tom Smith, with the key idea emerging around 1847 and early versions appearing between about 1845 and 1850. The distinctive “crack” mechanism was added slightly later, around 1860, turning his bonbon-style novelties into the familiar Christmas crackers used on festive tables today.
