The First Fleet left England on 13 May 1787 and arrived at Botany Bay, on the coast of what became New South Wales, in January 1788, with the main arrival usually dated to 18 January 1788. It then moved a few days later to Sydney Cove in Port Jackson, where the formal beginning of the British penal colony is marked on 26 January 1788, a date now associated with Australia Day.
