Veterans Day in the United States was first established as a legal holiday on May 13, 1938, under the name Armistice Day, to be observed each year on November 11. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed the holiday Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, not just those of World War I.
