Hoodies in the modern sense were invented in the early 1930s, when the sportswear company Champion (then Knickerbocker Knitting Company) added a hood to heavy sweatshirts for workers in cold New York warehouses and for athletes. Earlier hooded garments existed for centuries, but the sweatshirt-style hoodie dates specifically to that 1930s innovation.
