Instagram messages live in your Direct Messages (DMs) inbox , which you open from the main home screen of the app or website.

Main inbox location

  • On the Instagram app (iPhone/Android):
    • Open Instagram and make sure you are on the Home (feed) tab.
* Look at the **top right corner** for the chat bubble / Messenger icon and tap it. That opens your messages inbox (DMs).
  • On a computer (instagram.com):
    • Log in, then look at the left sidebar or top right for the same messages / Messenger icon and click it to see all your chats.

Primary, General, and Requests

  • Inside your inbox, there are usually Primary and General tabs if you use message categories; your conversations may be in either tab.
  • If you are missing a message, check Message Requests , where messages from people you don’t follow often go.

If messages seem missing

  • Some chats can be in archived or hidden sections, depending on Instagram’s newer features and settings.
  • Disappearing messages, Vanish Mode, or ephemeral story replies can make it look like messages are gone when they were designed to auto‑remove after viewing or after some time.

TL;DR: Go to the Home screen → tap the small messages/Messenger icon in the top right (or left sidebar on web) → check Primary , General , and Message Requests to find where your Instagram messages are.
