Your ovaries are located low in your abdomen, in your pelvis, one on each side of your uterus.

Basic location

  • The ovaries sit in the pelvis , which is the lower area of the abdomen between your hip bones.
  • There are two ovaries, left and right, shaped a bit like small almonds or olives.
  • Each ovary lies on either side of the uterus, close to the ends of the fallopian tubes.

From the outside (what that means on your body)

  • On the outside of your body, they are roughly in the lower belly area, a bit below and inward from the hip bones.
  • Many people describe the area as a little lower than where “period cramps” are often felt, near the sides of the pubic hairline region.

How they’re held in place

  • The ovaries are attached to the uterus and pelvic wall by ligaments, so they are not just floating around.
  • They sit in a small space called the ovarian fossa, near important blood vessels in the pelvis.

A few quick facts

  • Each ovary is usually about 3–4 cm long (around the size of your thumb).
  • They release eggs and produce hormones like estrogen and progesterone that regulate the menstrual cycle.

If you are having pain in that area, unusual bleeding, or severe cramps, a health professional should check it, because pelvic pain can have many causes besides the ovaries.
