Chernobyl happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the town of Pripyat in northern Ukraine, close to the border with Belarus.

Quick Scoop

  • The disaster took place in what was then the Soviet Union, in the Ukrainian SSR, about 100 km (60–80 miles) north of Kyiv.
  • The plant sat by the Pripyat River, just a short distance from the purpose-built workers’ city of Pripyat and not far from the older city of Chernobyl (Chornobyl) itself.
  • Today the area is known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone , a heavily contaminated and largely abandoned region spanning parts of northern Ukraine near the Belarus border.
