Duke Ellington grew up in Washington, D.C., in a secure, middle-class African American neighborhood, especially around the city’s West End and U Street/LeDroit Park areas. He was born there on April 29, 1899, and spent his childhood and youth in that Black Washington community before moving to New York in the 1920s.
