Sophocles lived in ancient Greece, primarily in and around the city-state of Athens.

He was born in Colonus (often called Colonus Hippius), a small village or deme just outside the walls of Athens in the region of Attica, and this remained his home area throughout his life. As an adult he was closely tied to Athens itself, where he was active as a dramatist and public figure and where he eventually died.
