Fireflies usually spend the day resting on or near the ground, hidden in tall grass, shrubs, leaves, or other low vegetation. They’re mostly nocturnal, so they become active again at dusk and at night.

Quick Scoop

  • During daylight, many fireflies stay still and stay concealed.
  • They often rest low in grass or foliage to avoid heat and predators.
  • Some species are active in the daytime, but the flashing fireflies most people notice are the night-active kind.

Why you don’t see them

Their daytime behavior is more about hiding and conserving energy than going somewhere far away. In the evening, they move upward into the open so they can flash and find mates.

Tiny example

If you walk through a yard at noon and see no fireflies, they’re probably just tucked into the grass or plants nearby, waiting for nightfall.
