Information from receptors is taken to the central nervous system (CNS) – mainly the brain (and sometimes the spinal cord) – where it is processed and interpreted.

Quick Scoop: What Happens

  • Receptors (in skin, eyes, ears, etc.) detect a stimulus and generate nerve impulses.
  • These impulses travel along sensory neurones to the brain and spinal cord , which together form the CNS.
  • The CNS acts as the coordination centre , processing this incoming information and deciding on an appropriate response before sending signals back out to effectors (muscles or glands).
