Barack Obama was raised mainly in Hawaii and Indonesia.

He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961 and spent his early childhood there with his mother and maternal grandparents. At age six he moved with his mother and stepfather to Jakarta, Indonesia, where he lived and attended local schools until about age ten. He then returned to Honolulu and was brought up largely by his grandparents while attending Punahou School through high school, an experience he later said strongly shaped his worldview.
