The Foot Locker brand was launched in 1974 by the F. W. Woolworth Company (often referred to simply as Woolworth).

Woolworth had previously acquired Kinney Shoe Corporation in 1963, and the first Foot Locker store was opened as part of the Kinney division in City of Industry, California, in 1974.
