Operant conditioning is most closely associated with the American psychologist B. F. Skinner , who formally developed and named the concept and is often called the “father of operant conditioning.” Earlier work by Edward L. Thorndike, especially his “law of effect,” laid the groundwork for the idea, but Skinner turned it into a systematic theory and experimental method.
