The sport of volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA.

He originally called the game “Mintonette,” designing it as a less physically rough alternative to basketball for adult businessmen. A colleague later suggested the name “volleyball” to better reflect the volleying of the ball back and forth over the net, and the new name stuck.
