who is hosting the winter olympics 2026

The 2026 Winter Olympics are being hosted by Italy, in the joint host cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, commonly branded as Milano Cortina 2026.
Host country and cities
Italy was selected by the International Olympic Committee to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, beating a rival bid from Stockholm–Åre in Sweden in a members’ vote. The Games will use a multi‑city model centred on Milan, a major northern Italian metropolis, and Cortina d’Ampezzo, a traditional Alpine winter sports resort.
When the Games take place
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are scheduled to run from 6 to 22 February 2026. This edition will be the 25th Winter Olympic Games and the fourth time Italy has hosted the Olympics, after Cortina 1956, Rome 1960, and Turin 2006.
Why Milano Cortina was chosen
In June 2019, at the 134th IOC Session in Lausanne, Milano–Cortina won the host vote by 47–34 over Stockholm–Åre. A key factor was that most competition venues are existing or temporary facilities, which supports cost control and sustainability goals in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms.
A quick look at the venues
Events will be spread across several clusters in northern Italy, using both urban and mountain settings.
- Milan: indoor ice events such as figure skating and hockey (planned).
- Cortina d’Ampezzo: Alpine skiing and sliding sports, drawing on its 1956 legacy.
- Other sites like Bormio and Livigno: additional Alpine and freestyle/snowboard events.
This distributed layout is designed to mix a modern city environment with classic Alpine landscapes while reusing established winter sports venues.
