who was born on the mayflower
Two babies are recorded as being born on the Mayflower during its famous 1620 voyage and anchorage:
- Oceanus Hopkins – born at sea during the Atlantic crossing to parents Stephen and Elizabeth Hopkins, and believed to have died in childhood a few years later.
- Peregrine White – born in November 1620 while the ship lay at anchor off Cape Cod, to William and Susanna White, and remembered as the first English child of the Pilgrims born in America.
Both births became symbolically important in later storytelling about the Mayflower, with Oceanus representing life begun amid the voyage itself and Peregrine representing the start of the new colonial generation in New England.
