Why you keep getting tonsillitis is usually one of a few things: repeated viral infections, recurrent bacterial infections such as strep, or a throat/immune setup that makes you more prone to infection.

Common reasons

  • Viral infections. These are the most common cause of tonsillitis overall, and they can keep coming back if you’re repeatedly exposed to colds, flu, or similar viruses.
  • Bacterial infection. Strep throat and other bacterial infections can recur, especially if treatment was incomplete or you were re-exposed.
  • Frequent germ exposure. Being around lots of people, especially in schools or workplaces, increases the chance of catching the infections that trigger tonsillitis.
  • Weaker immune defenses or chronic stress. Some sources note that poor immunity, stress, poor sleep, or poor nutrition may make repeat infections more likely.
  • Irritation and hygiene factors. Smoke exposure, dehydration, and poor oral hygiene can also make the throat and tonsils more vulnerable.
  • Anatomy or special conditions. Some people may have structural or genetic factors that make recurrence more likely, and children can also have related syndromes such as PFAPA.

When it counts as frequent

Tonsillitis is often considered recurrent if it happens about 7 times in one year, 5 times per year for 2 years, or 3 times per year for 3 years.

What usually helps

  • See a clinician if it keeps happening, so they can tell whether it’s viral, bacterial, or something else.
  • Antibiotics only help bacterial cases , not viral ones.
  • Tonsillectomy may be considered for chronic or recurrent cases, especially when infections keep returning or don’t respond well to treatment.
