The goalie can use his hands only inside his own penalty area , and even then there are a few exceptions. A goalkeeper cannot handle a deliberate back- pass from a teammate’s feet, cannot pick up a throw-in from a teammate, and must release the ball within 6 seconds once in control of it.

Main rule

  • Inside the penalty area: hands are allowed.
  • Outside the penalty area: the goalie is treated like any other player and cannot use hands.
  • The ball’s position matters, not where the goalie is standing.

Important exceptions

  • No handling on a deliberate kick-back from a teammate.
  • No handling directly from a teammate’s throw-in.
  • No handling again after releasing the ball until another player touches it.
  • The goalie must not hold the ball longer than 6 seconds.

Simple example

If a teammate passes the ball back with a foot inside the box, the goalie has to play it with feet or another body part, not pick it up. If the opponent crosses the ball into the box, the goalie can catch or punch it there.

Quick note

In soccer forums and rule guides, this is one of the most common beginner questions because the answer depends on both where the ball is and how it got there.
