What “double demerits” means
- Double demerits temporarily increase the number of demerit points for certain road offences such as speeding, illegal mobile phone use, not wearing a seatbelt or not wearing a motorcycle helmet.
- These points still stay on your record for the normal period (commonly three years), even though the double demerit period itself has ended.
Current holiday period end dates
- In New South Wales and the ACT, the Christmas–New Year double demerit period runs from 12:00 am Wednesday 24 December 2025 until 11:59 pm Sunday 4 January 2026.
- In Western Australia, the Christmas/Boxing Day double demerits cover Friday 19 December 2025 through Sunday 4 January 2026, which also includes New Year’s Day for that period.
Other states and ongoing rules
- Queensland uses a different system: certain repeat offences can attract double demerits any time of year , not just on holidays.
- Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory currently do not apply double demerits at any time of year, though normal demerit points still apply.
