The baker would come twice every day — once early in the morning on his selling round and again when he returned after selling all his bread.

The children ran to meet him not for the ordinary loaves (which the maid usually bought) but because they eagerly longed for the special “bread- bangles,” sometimes made as a sweet, special kind of bread just for them.
