Transcription takes place in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, where the DNA is located and used as a template to make RNA (usually mRNA).

In prokaryotic cells (like bacteria), which do not have a nucleus, transcription occurs in the cytoplasm , and translation can even begin while transcription is still happening.
