Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, who is commonly known as Gautama Buddha or Shakyamuni Buddha.

He was a prince of the Shakya clan, born in Lumbini in what is now Nepal, sometime between the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. After renouncing his royal life to seek a way out of human suffering, he attained enlightenment and began teaching the path now known as Buddhism.
