The Governor-General of India in 1857 was Lord Charles John Canning, commonly known as Lord Canning.
He served as Governor-General from 1856 to 1858, so he was in office when the Revolt of 1857 (also called the First War of Indian Independence or the Sepoy Mutiny) broke out and throughout its main phase. After the revolt, when power passed from the East India Company to the British Crown in 1858, Canning became the first Viceroy of India.
